In this book, he traces his roots over a period of six generations from a small village Vilakuddi in Tamil Nadu to Calcutta to his present day job in Mumbai. Through the journey of his family, we also get an insight into many historical instances and how they changed the lives of people living in those times. R. Gopalakrishnan's great- great- great grandfather Ranganathan was born in 1824 in a land owning a Tamil Brahmin family. The period is famous for the formation of Indian National Congress, 1877 famine, introduction of postal system, etc.Then came the era of the great thinker and philosopher Periyar E. V. Ramaswamy Naicker, who was an advocate of abolition of the caste system and ended the dominance of Brahmins in Tamil society. During this period, three members of the author's family, his father and two cousins, left Tamil Nadu to find better job opportunities in Calcutta. Despite the language and cultural barrier, the writer's father, Rajam worked as a stenographer and studied hard to become an accountant. The book is a personal journey of hope and optimism.
